Bushaltestellen, City-Toiletten, Bänke, Mülleimer, Infoboards …

Stadtmöblierung in Kombination mit Außenwerbung bestimmt seit mehr als 30 Jahren den öffentlichen Raum von Metropolen. Das Project "Hacking Urban Furniture" untersucht den bisherigen Umgang mit diesem Fakt und stellt ihn in Frage. KünstlerInnen, StadtforscherInnen, PolitikerInnen und AktivistInnen erforschen gemeinsam das Potential von neuen Konzepten öffentlicher Stadtmöblierung und präsentieren ihre Ergebnisse in Form von Kunstwerken, Performances, Workshops und Talks.

Vom 16. bis 25. März 2018 findet im ZK/U - Zentrum für Kunst und Urbanistik die Ausstellung „Hacking Urban Furniture“ statt. Sie ist Teil des gleichnamigen mehrjährigen Forschungsprojekts und beschäftigt sich experimentell mit der Geschichte, Gegenwart und Zukunft von Stadtmobiliar (engl. ‘urban furniture’). KünstlerInnen, StadtforscherInnen, PolitikerInnen und AktivistInnen erforschen gemeinsam das Potential von neuen Konzepten öffentlicher Stadtmöblierung. Die Ausstellung wird vom Hauptstadtkulturfonds gefördert.

Artistic Positions

Specifically commissioned and produced for Hacking Urban Furniture: 5 artist(collective)s have worked with various elements of the public spaces in Berlin.

Monozelle

Am Otto-Platz erscheint ein Endvierziger in hellem Oberhemd, der eine transparente Kabine mit gekurvter Vorderfront vor sich her schiebt. Der Transport endet an einer Parkbank, auf die die schmale Kabine aufgesetzt werden kann. Der Mann setzt sich auf die Bank, zieht das Acrylglas-Gehäuse zu sich heran und nutzt es für die nächsten Stunden wie einen ausgelagerten Büroplatz. Ab und zu spricht er mit Neugierigen durch die seitlich angebrachten Hörsiebe. Später verlässt er den Ort wieder mitsamt der Kabine. Am nächsten Tag sucht der Mann mit der Bürokabine eine andere Parkbank auf.

Der international offene einphasige Ideenwettbewerb „Hacking Urban Furniture – Stadtmöbel in Kommunal-Kollektiver-Kooperation“ suchte Ideen für neue Formen, Inhalte und Konzepte von Stadtmöblierung. Dabei ging es um grundsätzliche Konzeptionen mit neuen ökonomischen Modellen, funktionalen Erweiterungen und zivilgesellschaftlicher Teilhabe. Bloße Designfragen waren nicht das Thema des Wettbewerbes, sondern das Zusammenwirken von Gesellschaft, öffentlicher Funktion und formaler Lösung.
